LAWRENCE, KS- It all came down to a pair of games on the final day of the 2024 regular season. After the dust finally settled, the Mid-America League Championship series matchups were set.
The Abilene Flying Bison and the Joplin Outlaws entered today’s action already clinching the #1 and #2 seeds respectively.
The real battle was for the #3 seed between the Piney Woods TimberHogs and the Sherman Shadowcats. One game separated the two clubs coming into today with Piney Woods (31-34) having a one-game advantage over Sherman (30-35).
Sherman easily defeated Joplin 11-1 in a 7-inning mercy rule game to improve to 31-35. Piney Woods was dropped by Texarkana 17-6 in an 8-inning mercy rule contest to fall to 31-35. The head-to-head tiebreaker was used to break the jam and Sherman earned the #3 seed by virtue of a 7-games-to-5 advantage in head-to-head contests with Piney Woods.
The other game on the day’s slate saw Abilene handcuff the Fort Smith Marshals 14-0 in a 7-inning mercy rule game.
The semi-final round of the Mid-America League Championship Series will begin on Tuesday, August 13, with the #2 Joplin Outlaws facing the #3 Sherman Shadowcats at 3:00pmCT. The #1-seeded Abilene Flying Bison will take on the #4-seed Piney Woods TimberHogs in the nightcap at 7:15pmCT.
Both winning teams will then play one game on Wednesday, August 14, with the winner being declared the Mid-America League Champion for 2024.
All games will be played at Walt Driggers Field on the campus of McMurry University, the summer home of the Mid-America League’s Abilene Flying Bison.
